Integrative Medicine Curriculum

Program Goals:

To create future leaders in the fields of family and integrative medicine through

  • Enhancement of clinical skills
  • Acquisition of teaching, administrative and leadership experience
  • Opportunity to pursue individual areas of interest through scholarly activities and research
  • Development of an understanding of integrative medicine principles and practice
  • Fostering a learning environment which facilitates not only professional but also overall personal growth

Fellowship Activities:

The following are required components of the fellowship experience on a weekly basis:

  • Three half days of seeing patients in the primary care clinic
  • One half day of resident supervision in the primary care clinic
  • One half day of providing integrative medicine consultations at the integrative medicine clinic
  • Three to four hours weekly creating personalized health plans for patients. (This time will decrease as fellows become increasingly familiar with integrative approaches to various conditions).
  • Participation in the University of Arizona Associate Fellowship in Integrative Medicine. The program requires 8-10 hours weekly of online coursework, readings, and experiential learning
  • Attendance at integrative medicine grand rounds one half day the first Wednesday of each month
  • Participation in didactic sessions in integrative medicine, teaching and writing skills, journal clubs, case presentations, evidence- based medicine literature reviews, and/or experiential learning with various providers affiliated with the integrative medicine clinic three half-day sessions monthly
  • The remaining time (approximately two half days weekly) is flexible time that may used in various ways, including:
    • Time to participate in coursework relating to areas of interest. This might include completing a Masters of Public Health, participating in the MEDAL program or Primary Care Faculty Development Program, or taking courses in education, epidemiology, research methods, environmental medicine, community-based approaches to care, etc.
    • Time for preparing/giving presentations and teaching courses, such as the Patient, Doctor, and Society (PDS) medical student course
    • Meetings related to involvement in various groups, such as the resident education committee, resident recruitment committee, the fellow's personal mentorship committee, medical student interest
    • Time to conduct research
    • Time to explore the modalities with which integrative providers must be familiar

The following are expected to occur on a monthly or yearly basis. Fellows:

  • Take one OB call and one adult medicine/pediatrics call monthly
  • Co-attend on one of the family medicine services for 2 weeks a year
  • Provide postpartum rounding for primary care clinic 4-6 weeks per year
  • Offer presentations at the local, state, or national level
  • Present at resident teaching seminars
  • Publish
  • Attend national conferences, which may include STFM annual conferences, the AAFP Scientific Assembly, the American Board of Holistic Medicine, etc.
  • Attend three residential week conferences over the course of the two-year curriculum required by the University of Arizona Associate Fellowship
  • Meet monthly with a faculty member and every 6 months with a mentorship committee comprised of members selected by the fellow
  • Participate in a yearly integrative medicine departmental retreat
  • Participate actively on a regular basis with the larger University of Wisconsin fellow community and the growing integrative/holistic medicine community
  • Assume active responsibility for maintaining own health. Fellows write their own integrative health plans and are given time to follow through with their plans of care

Other optional fellowship experiences may include:

  • Travel to Beijing for a two-week experiential curriculum surrounding Traditional Chinese Medicine
  • Travel to Guadalajara as part of an exchange program with the University of Guadalajara for training in traditional Mexican healing techniques
  • Participation in patient/provider retreats sponsored by the Integrative Medicine Clinic

Fellowship Stipend and Benefits

  • Fellows are paid at PGY-4 or PGY-5 rates
  • A computer is provided for the duration of the fellowship (desktop or laptop, as preferred)
  • Tuition, books and course supplies for the University of Arizona program
  • CME funds for attendance at three conferences yearly
  • University of Wisconsin Faculty Benefits Package
  • STFM and AAFP memberships
