Shadow a Family Medicine Resident at St. Mary’s
The University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health Med1 and Med2 students are invited to shadow a Family Medicine resident at St. Mary's and see first-hand what residency life is all about.
Who can do this? Open to UW Med1 and Med2 students only.
How does it work? If you are on the Family Medicine Interest Group mailing list, you will be notified of this opportunity via email late February/early March 2010 and given a choice of time slots. Choose a time slot that fits best with the type of experience you would like to have. One of the FMIG leaders will confirm your time.
Here is a general template for how the Family Medicine service works (times are approximate):
- 0730 - resident on call previous night "signs out" the list of patients (describes what happened with the patients the previous day/night). At end of sign out, residents divide up the list of patients to see.
- 0800-1000 - see patients (will be adult inpatient general bed and/or intermediate care and/or ICU.
- 1000 - return to conference room and have "formal sit down rounds" - each resident will discuss the patients they just saw. Attending physician will help resident formulate plan of care.
- 1100 - residents write orders, revisit patients, update lists.
- 1200 - residents go to lectures most days (students can attend)
- 1200-0730 - residents address any issues that come up with patients, admit new patients, etc.
What is expected of me? You will basically shadow (follow) one of the first-year family medicine residents while they work in the hospital. You will not be seeing patients independently or writing in the patient's chart. Hopefully, this experience will give you some insight into your future residency experiences (and get your nose out of the books for a while!)
What do I do on my shadowing day? Call St. Mary's operator, 258-6100, and ask for the on-call family medicine resident at least 30 minutes before arrival at the hospital. You can hold on the line for the resident or ask for them to call you back. When he/she calls back, introduce yourself and confirm location to meet (as well as confirming that it is still okay to shadow on that day). Note: even though you may have a time slot confirmed, it is subject to last minute cancellation by the resident if they are not able to accommodate you due to emergencies or patient load.
What do I wear? You should wear your white coat, name tag, and professional attire.
Location: Directions and parking at St. Mary's.
