Summer Research & Clinical Assistantship

MEDICAL STUDENTS: How About Spending Your Summer in the
Department of Family Medicine's Summer Research and Clinical Assistantship?

The Department of Family Medicine (DFM) invites UW Med 1 and Med 2 students to join us this summer for a very enjoyable educational experience. Every year we have several faculty who are eager to have medical students come work with them on people-oriented, clinically relevant, hands-on research projects. (See Faculty Projects for 2009) Students have ample opportunities to see patients in a variety of settings (office, hospital, others), learn some important concepts and skills about research, and participate in social events with other faculty and students.

Dates: The program runs from Tuesday, May 26th through Friday, July 17th. After working for two days with your faculty mentor, all student researchers will meet in Madison on May 28th and 29th for two days of orientation, introductory seminars on family medicine research and socializing. On June 19th, students will reconvene in Madison for progress reports, additional seminars, one-on-one consultations on their projects, and other social events. On July 17th, student researchers will give final presentations in Madison, debrief, and celebrate. Thus, you will have 34 full days available for research and clinical activities with your project's faculty. Students may negotiate with their faculty mentors regarding vacation time in exchange for additional work during evenings, weekends, or before or after the official program. Additional work on presentations or publications after the summer will be uncompensated.

Locations: Madison area, Milwaukee, Wausau, Beaver Dam

Director: Jon Temte, MD/PhD, a family physician in the DFM, will coordinate the program and direct all educational activities. Dr. Temte earned his PhD in Environmental Physiology and has an active interest in training family physicians to do research, as well as research interests in common viral respiratory illnesses. This summer he and other Department of Family Medicine faculty will plan interactive, participatory seminars and workshops, so that students will learn by doing, not just listening.

Stipends/Housing/Travel: Students will receive a $2500 stipend. Accommodations for seminars in Madison will be provided for participants doing their assistantships at other locations.

How to apply: Please complete the online application, including your cover letter. As soon as your application is received, copies of your application will be circulated to the faculty with whom you are interested in working. The faculty members will contact you to set up interviews either in person or by phone. These interviews will allow faculty and students to determine whether there is mutual interest. Faculty and student matches will be consummated by signing an agreement, which shall be considered binding on both parties unless dire, unforeseen circumstances occur. Since agreements between faculty and students may be made at any time, students who submit their applications early are more likely to have their choice of projects.
