NEW: Osteopathic Manipulation
This workshop will look at Osteopathic Manipulation, which includes structural diagnosis and use of Osteopathic Manipulative Technique (OMT) in the diagnosis and management of the patient.
NEW: Integrative Medicine
In this workshop we'll discuss integrative medicine, the art of combining alternative medicine with mainstream medical practices.
NEW: Diabetes Testing & Insulin Management
Casting
This workshop will allow participants an opportunity to practice applying commonly used casts. This includes working with plaster, OCL, and fiberglass. Participants will both apply and remove casts on each other.
Splinting/Taping
Participants will both apply and remove splints on each other. UW Health Trainers will also be available to assist with taping and bracing common injuries.
ECG Interpretation
In this workshop, participants will become familiar with patterns seen in electrocardiograms and to provide a system for accurate interpretation. Electrocardiography is a fundamental part of cardiovascular assessment. It is an essential tool for investigating cardiac arrhythmias and is also useful in diagnosing cardiac disorders such as myocardial infarction. Although computerized interpretation available, it is considered unreliable, making competency and interpretation an essential skill.
Suturing & Punch Biopsy
This workshop will provide you with the opportunity to learn basic principles and practice skills of suturing, performing skin biopsies, and repairing lacerations using pigs feet models.
Joint Injections
This workshop will discuss and demonstrate joint injection techniques for common musculoskeletal conditions including tennis elbow, knee osteoarthritis, rotator cuff syndrome and others. Participants will be able to practice anatomical landmark location on human subjects and perform injections on mechanical models. This is active and fun.
OB Basics & Prenatal Skills
Have you worried that you might have to deliver a baby the next time you are on an airplane and you hear the dreaded "Is there a doctor in the house?" Well, this session will certainly not make you an expert but will give you hands-on practice with the basics of: (1) how to use that wheel thing to "date" a pregnancy and how to use the handheld Doppler to check fetal heart tones, (2) how to check a laboring patient's cervix, and (3) how to physically deliver a baby (in other words - where to put your hands, how to help the baby out!).
OB Ultrasound
This workshop will introduce participants to the basics of prenatal ultrasound. Topics including physics, limited and complete scanning will be discussed and participants will be given an opportunity to do some hands-on scanning of a woman near the end of her pregnancy.
OB Advanced Skills (Delivery & Procedures)
The OB Advanced Skills workshop will include lecture, discussion, and then hands-on practice of management of shoulder dystocia, vacuum-assisted delivery, and forceps delivery. Other topics will be discussed as time allows.
IV Procedures
Experienced phlebotomists from UW Hospital will review the anatomy of vascular access and provide specific instruction on starting IV infusions. Hands on practice starting IV’s will be provided using simulation models.
Phlebotomy
Experienced phlebotomists from UW Hospital will review the anatomy of vascular access and provide specific instruction on techniques for drawing blood. Hands on practice drawing blood will be provided using simulation models and peer volunteers.
GYN
Participants in the GYN procedure workshop will be introduced to the concepts of sounding the uterus, placing Mirena and Paragard IUDs, and performing endometrial biopsies. Participants will also be introduced to basic colposcopic techniques and colposcopic equipment.
Vasectomy/Circumcision
Faculty and resident instructors will review the male anatomy, discuss the indications, risks and benefits of these procedures, and provide specific instruction on the techniques for outpatient minimally invasive vasectomy as well as neonatal circumcision. Hands on practice for both procedures will be provided using simulation models.
