Family Medicine Student Electives
The Department of Family Medicine offers a variety of electives for Med 1-4 students. See a complete listing of Med 4 electives and other electives.
How to Apply
UW Madison Students
UW medical students must have completed third year course work and passed Med 3 exams, including YEPSA, prior to starting a 4th year Family Medicine elective. The DFM cannot accept registrations via the spring student lottery system as all requests need to be pre-approved in the clinics.
- To request an elective, submit our DFM on-line application. You will be notified whether your request can be accommodated as soon as possible.
Visiting Students
Students who have completed 3rd year coursework from other medical schools and allopathic and osteopathic medical schools in the U.S. and outside the U.S. may also apply for Madison-area and statewide electives.
- Complete University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health (UWSMPH) visiting student application
- Fill out DFM on-line application
- Once the DFM receives notification that your UWSMPH application is completed, a request will be made for clinic placement and you will be notified as soon as possible.
- Visiting medical students do not have to pay registration fees for elective courses. Visiting DO students pay UW registration fees, but are reimbursed from the WI Assoc. of Osteopathic Physicians & Surgeons (WAOPS). You must be a member of the WAOPS to request reimbursement. Membership is free to students.
