Availability: Two to eight weeks, availability varies. Credits: 1 credit per week. 1 student/period.
Content Covered: The students and faculty arrange the content at the beginning of the rotation. The elective is designed for flexibility in providing for diverse educational needs of students with little experience or prior experience in primary health care. The rotation is designed to provide adequate exposure to common outpatient problems with sufficient support and teaching readily available. Students may choose a variety of complementing special activities, which relate well to the overall family medicine experience.
Methods and Settings of Instruction: Students will be directly involved in patient care in the clinic and hospital under the supervision of community faculty physicians. Residents may also be involved in teaching. There may be assigned readings, discussions, reports and/or conferences.
Expectations of Students: The student will work with physicians in the clinics caring for patients from the area. Students will be expected to see patients, make decisions and write orders in the clinic and in the hospital. They will be expected to follow their patients, including home visits. The experience will emphasize not only medical care, but also the point of view of the patients who live in the rural community.
