Curriculum: Introduction to Leadership in Medicine

Goal: Recognize the importance of leadership in health care

Objectives:

  • Discuss the meaning of leadership in health care and in communities
  • Review and reflect on different leadership qualities and styles
  • Experience and reflect on the differences between leadership and followership
  • Identify personal leadership qualities that you wish to develop as you progress through LOCUS

Methods:

  • Participate in leadership discussions and exercises at LOCUS retreats
  • Develop and refine a personal mission statement
  • Discuss leadership and observe leadership skills of your mentor(s)
  • Collaborate as member of a community health project team

  • Leadership for Change in the Education of Health Professionals (Chapter 1)

Evaluation:

  • Observe, reflect and assess interactions with others
  • Assess usefulness of personal mission statement
  • Solicit feedback from peers and community health team members
