Project: Medical Careers - Behind the Scenes
Fellow: Joel Thomas Adler
Mentor: Beth Potter
Agency: UW-Extension
Team: Sean Bruggink

Fellow Bio:
Born in Eau Claire, WI, I graduated from Homestead High School in Mequon, WI. Spent my undergraduate years here, finishing with a wonderful study abroad experience in Madrid, Spain, and graduating with a degree in Spanish. Came straight to medical school and am absolutely loving my time.

Spare time interests include piano, reading, music, computers, basketball, and cooking. Well, I try to cook. And I think that I do all right. But that's another story.

Project Description:
This project is a continuation of a LOCUS project designed to educate rural youth about careers in health care. During a state 4-H conference in Madison, we organized two workshops involving various demonstrations and learning experiences to show that what we do really is fun, intersting, and rewarding.

Project Goals:

The goal of the project is simple - continue to stimulate interest and excitement in careers in the health professions to rural youth. Through collaboration with diverse faculty, staff, and medical students, we hope to encourage career exploration in health care.

As this is a continuing LOCUS project, expanding upon its strengths and continuing it to next year represent two goals. Personally, it is an exercise in leadership, resource management, and education. Education has always been an interest of mine, so continuing this LOCUS project seemed like a natural fit.

Accomplishments

I presented the project at the last fall meeting and submitted my written report. I have also committed to running the workshop next year for the UW-Extension, hopefully with an M1 volunteer.

Challenges: Past
Nothing new to note; I plan to begin recruiting for help after winter break is completed.

Next Steps:
Locus Project Objectives and Key Tasks Target Date for Completion
Find M1 to help run the workshop next year; begin planning. 2/1/2007

Challenges: Future The final challenge is finding somebody to take over the project next year. I kept accurate and dependable records of what I did... and will prepare a report on how to go about reproducing and updating it for next year!

Resource Needs:
The opportunity to present in fall (hopefully the first meeting after the retreat) and start recruiting! It really is a great, fun project that is a worthwhile contribution to the state of Wisconsin. The kids are full of energy and remind you why you went into this in the first place.
