Project Description:
Poor children in Peru need help because Peru does not have the resources to meet the needs of these children who live in poverty, on the streets or in orphanges.
Priorities:
1. Help these children who live in poverty by spending time with them and teaching them basic skills to take care of themselves.
2. Improve my medical skills
3. Learn about Peruvian culture
Inputs:
1. Resources
2. Myself
3. Students from Wass Elementary School in Troy, MI
4. Dr. Pedro Ruiz
5. Dr. Linnea Smith
Activities prior to trip:
1. Students from Wass will collect school supplies and gently used toys.
2. They will also package the items to be taken to Peru.
3. Study books/tapes to improve Spanish skills
Time:
I will spend almost 1 month in Peru plus a couple of weeks prior to the trip to get everything ready and work on my Spanish
Money:
The trip, in total, will cost me ~$2000. This includes flight to Lima, food, flight and guide to Iquitos (Amazon jungle), and outstanding expenses to bring items to the children.
Materials:
1. School supplies and toys
2. Other basic medical supplies that I can carry
3. Spanish and Peru reference material
Equipment:
I will be taking my stethoscope and other basic medical equipment.
Outputs:
1. What we do
2. Prior to the trip I am working with 4th and 5th graders at Wass Elementary school in Michigan. I will visit the school in mid-May to talk to them about Peru and my trip. They will be collecting school supplies for me to take to the children.
3. While in Peru, I will be participating in three separate, yet related activities.
a. Volunteering at children's clinic during the week. I will spend time with children who don't get a lot of one on one attention. I plan on teaching them a little about America, showing them basic hygiene like hand washing, conducting basic medical exams, and helping the orphanage with whatever needs to be done.
b. On the weekends I will be helping Dr. Ruiz as he visits clinics on the outskirts of Lima. These people don't have everyday access to health care.
c. The last few days of my trip to Peru I will go to a medical clinic deep in the Amazon Jungle. This clinic was set up by Dr. Linnea Smith (a UW grad). I will shadow her to get exposure to rural medicine in a place where the nearest hospital is hours away.
Short-Term Impact:
1. Learning about the Peruvian culture
2. Helping children in the orphanage
3. Helping people who need medical care
4. Improving my Spanish
5. Improving my medical schools
6. Exposing American children to a different culture and teaching them the importance of caring for others
Long-Term Impact
That I will develop the skills to be able to make a positive impact on people's lives. This includes helping people as a physician as well as being compassionate and being there for others who need help outside of the doctor's office. Also, to continue to set a positive example for children so that they will be compassionate and look for ways to help others.
Primary Objective:
To be able to help poor children in a third world country (Peru) by spending time with them, teaching them healthy living habits regarding personal hygiene, providing basic medical care, and by showing them that people do care about them.
Secondary Objectives:
Understand some of the unique problems that third world countries face regarding healthcare and daily living. In addition to spending time at the orphanage, I will also be helping Dr. Pedro Ruiz on the weekends as he sees patients in outlying areas around Lima. Further, I will also spend a few days shadowing Dr. Linnea Smith at her remote clinic in the Amazon Rainforest.
Also, I am working with an elementary school in Michigan to collect school supplies and toys for the children. The purpose of this activity is to teach American kids about Peru and some of the hardships that children in other countries face.
Tertiary Objective:
Improve my Spanish speaking skills
Challenges and Solutions:
My inadequate Spanish skills will be a barrier for this project.
