Project: Identification of risk factors for HIV infection among women in rural Haiti
Fellow: Fred Boehm
Mentor: Don Carufel-Wert, Mary Kay Smith Fawzi
Agency: Partners In Health
Team: Javi Salazar, Deogratias Niyizonkiza

Fellow Bio:
I grew up in Stevens Point, WI. After high school I moved to Madison for undergraduate studies at UW. I received a B.S. in chemistry, biochemistry, & math in 2001. Prior to starting med school, I was a graduate student in population health sciences at UW. I will receive a M.S. from that program prior to completing medical school.

Project Description:

Partners In Health and co-workers have collected health information from nearly 1,000 women over a 3-year period. With this information, they have compiled a data base suitable for analysis with computer programs. I will apply my knowledge of statistical analysis to identify factors associated with HIV infection in these women. Short-term outcomes include presentation of my results at the UW School of Medicine and Public Health Research Forum and preparation of a scholarly manuscript detailing the findings. Final evaluation of the project will be accomplished through discussions with my co-workers and critiques of our results by other epidemiologists.

Project Goals:

I would like to improve my ability to work toward a common goal with a small group of dedicated individuals. Additionally, I would like to develop my leadership skills in the area of advocacy on behalf of the poor.

Challenges and Solutions:

I anticipate that the creation of the computer code needed for the statistical analysis will be one challenge. I also anticipate that preparation of a scholarly manuscript will be challenging, as I have never before done this.

To address difficulties with the creation of the computer code, I intend to use online SAS manuals and to communicate with other epidemiologists. To address difficulties with the manuscript preparation, I will work closely with Mary Kay, who has considerable experience in preparing manuscripts.

Next Steps:
Locus Project Objectives and Key Tasks Target Date for Completion
Travel to Boston to work at Partners In Health's offices August 15, 2004
Present results at UW School of Medicine and Public Health research forum November 1, 2004
Present results in a noon-time talk May 1, 2005
Resource Needs:

I need further statistical training, plus training in advocacy on behalf of the poor.
