Project: Smoking Cessation
Fellow: April Herlache
Mentor: Dr. Rich Brown
Team: Blake Smith
Fellow Bio:
I grew up in Sturgeon Bay, WI. I attended the UW for my undergrad and received a BA with majors in International Relations, Portuguese and Latin American Studies. After I graduated, I headed to Portland, OR and worked in international transportation for 5 years. I ended that career as an account manager for SeaLand Services, Inc.
Shortly after arriving in Portland, I met my future husband to be. He was a free-lance web designer before we moved to Madison and has found work at Great Lakes Higher Education as a web producer. He's also a great guy for picking up and moving back to WI with me so I could go back to school. We live over by East High School with our cat and dog.
I was involved in several community activities in Portland. I tutored general chemistry students at Portland State University. I volunteered at the Oregon Health Sciences University in the cardiology department and was a health educator at a low-income clinic in my neighborhood. I utilized my Spanish skills quite a bit at the clinic. Last year, my husband and I went on a medical mission to Peru. We worked at a boy's orphanage and helped with a free medical clinic for a school. We also took a few days off to visit Machu Picchu, which we both loved.
While at Portland State, I worked as the manager for a placental pathology office and did research at a local hospital on trauma patients. The research is trying to determine if non-physical factors affect a patient's recovery from trauma (i.e. are patient's suffering from mild to severe post-traumatic stress disorder, and if so, is it being treated appropriately?)
Project Description:
Blake and I will be the primary volunteers, with possible participation from pre-med undergraduates or other interested parties.
Primary time commitment will be during the free clinic hours on Tuesday evenings.
Primary partner is Dean Clinic. Other partners may include the Asthma Coalition at the State Department of Health, undergraduate organizations, and MEDIC.
Techniques used will be based on the TIBS training provided by the UW-Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health.
goals = The goal is to establish a smoking cessation program at the free asthma clinic sponsored by Dean Clinics. The clients will be patients and their families at the clinic. The clinic runs Tuesday evenings from 5-7 p.m. Health information about smoking and group or individual counseling will be held in conjunction with the clinic. Ultimately, would like to pass on the program to a new LOCUS fellow or pre-med organization.
Project Goals:
Challenges and Solutions:
Anticipated challenges include follow-up after initial consultation. This could be addressed by assigning "case loads" to the counselors for follow-up (which in and of itself could present its own challenges).
Consistent availability on Tuesday evenings could be problematic. Possible shift sharing has been discussed.
Responsiveness of clientele at the clinic and best method (individual or group) is as of yet undetermined. Time will be spent at the clinic to gauge most effective methodology. Some language barriers may be encountered.
