Project:Mentorship Program for Adolescent GirlsFellow:Marisa Holubar Partner Agency: Mentor:Dr. Ann Behrmann Team Members:
Fellow Bio: The Mentorship Achievement Program (MAP) matches M1s and M2s with 6th or 7th graders from O'Keefe or Toki Middle Schools. These pairs meet at least twice a month and participate in a wide variety of activities such as: community service, movies, sports, and homework. The mentor commitment is for 1 year after the pair first meets, although it is hoped that all relationships will last much longer. Project Goals:To offer direction to struggling middle school students by providing one-on-one contact with strong, reliable role models. To nurture self-confidence, responsibility, and potential in underprivileged kids who may be lacking such positive reinforcement from other aspects of their life. Accomplishments:MAP is now 3 years old and has become an established medical school community service program. When I started clinical rotations, I turned over MAP leadership responsibilities to 2 groups of dedicated and enthusiastic M2's who have added a great deal to the program - including an established mentor development lecture series and more group activities. MAP (along with MEDIC) was also recognized by the University of Wisconsin chancellor as an outstanding community service program. Challenges of the Past:Each new group of leaders faces the challenge of balancing school work with the logistics and energy needed to run MAP well. This just takes time - and realistic goals. This was difficult for me to accomplish as a M2 starting MAP and will continue to be a challenge for each new group of leaders. I've been overwhelmingly impressed with each group's accomplishments. Challenges and Solutions:
Resource Needs: VOLUNTEERS TO BE MENTORS! Comments:MAP added tremendous depth to my medical training. I'm grateful to the LOCUS program for allowing me to work on such a project. I am also incredibly grateful to Sharon Younkin for championing MAP since its beginning.
