Homeless - Diana Hornung

Project Summary:

Opening a homeless teen acute health care clinic with the help of MEDIC and Briarpatch to address the needs of the homeless youth population in Madison. The clinic will operate 1x/week and offer acute care with referral to other clinics for reproductive health, mental health, drugs and alcohol.

Major Steps Taken as of Dec. 99:

  • Needs assessment in conjunction with Briarpatch
  • Coordinated with MEDIC and voted the clinic "in"
  • Contacted youth coordinator of Madison, legal services of UW
  • Recruited students to work on this: organize supplies, publicize, coordinate referrals.

Major Challenges

  • Determining how to treating homeless youth under 18 without parental consent...contacted UW legal services and a multitude of clinics that provide care to adolescents to see how they manage.
  • Managing my time between school and project.....I'm still working on this !!!!

LOCUS's Role in Your Project

  • My mentor gave me my initial lead to contact Madison youth coordinator who then set me up with Briarpatch.
  • LOCUS(both advisors and students) has given me the support and motivation to keep this going.
