student photo Project: Medical Spanish
Fellow: Tim Olson
Mentor: Dr. Carufel-Wert, Lynne Cleeland
Team: Hannah Raasch

Fellow Bio:
Tim came into medical school having worked in the organic chemistry field. Tim said he considers himself a "worker bee" when it comes to projects. He is looking forward to becoming a more confident leader through his experiences in LOCUS.

Project Description:

Understand the resources available to patients with chronic pain and facilitate the use of those resources by patients in need.

Project Goals:

1. Acquire Funding
2. Hire an instructor
3. Develop a curriculum
4. Recruit members
5. Involve all health professional students, with focus on the UW Nursing School
6. Complete a 10 week course
7. Compile feedback
8. Involve "Cultural Competency" in the curriculum

Accomplishments:
The class for the 2002-2003 school year was a success.

Past Challenges:
Recruiting teaching patients was an ongoing problem. Lynne Cleeland was then able to secure funds from the school and pay the teaching patients. This made it much easier. Recruiting Nursing students was difficult given the lack of communication between the schools. We finished with 4 nursing students in a class of 20. It was a good opportunity for cooperative education between the health professionals who's careers are entirely integrated but who's education is completely segregated.

Future Challenges:
Communication, addressed with patience.

Comments:

The Goals of this class were threefold: Teach Medical Spanish, teach approaches to treating patients of other cultures (in a pragmatic way), encourage cooperation between the students of Medicine, Nursing, and PA. In addressing the second goal: part of the curriculum was to read "When the Spirit Leaves You, You Fall Down" and one chapter in "La Doctora" which was discussed, as well as semi-weekly cultural presentations.

Looking forward, with the continued emphasis on Culture in Medicine, I see this class being part of a "liberal arts requirement" in medical school. As part of a requirement of graduation, students must complete a class (example: Medical Spanish) or project related to culturally competent medicine. This would allow a flexible curriculum as broad as the concept of "Culture in Medicine" and allow students to focus their educational experience on the patient population they would like to serve in their careers. This would take the place of required didactics.
