Fellow Bio:
I was an immigrant from El Salvador who upon arrival did not speak a word of English. Having grown up in South Central Los Angeles in a single parent Spanish speaking home, I was able to break the mold society had cast. Through my academic achievements, I was able to attend Loyola High School and thereafter complete my undergraduate work in Intensive Molecular, Cellular and Developmental Biology at Yale University. During my first year of high school, I moved to Pasadena, California where I was chosen from a group of applicants to volunteer in the Urgent Care Clinic at Huntington Memorial Hospital. Later that year, I accepted a Group Leader position at Five Acres to serve as a mentor/big brother at a local Group home where I motivated and helped young children become healthy, productive adults. After my first year in college, I participated in the UCLA summer Pre-medical Enrichment Program (PREP). Through this program, I was able to work alongside Skid Roll and teach homeless adults and children in the Downtown Los Angeles area about health care through lectures and workshops. Having participated in various other community projects, I wish to use my leadership abilities to advance the quality of care for minority groups and help create trust between them and the medical community at large.
