Project Description:

In the summer following my first year of medical school, I refined a training workshop and developed curricular material that teaches self-advocacy and health competency principles to elders and "elder advocates" or caregivers. At the end of the summer, I then presented a number of workshops at area community centers and senior-living communities. The project was intended to be self-sustaining, and a volunteer from the Area Agency on Aging (AAA) has already been identified who will continue to conduct these workshops. As a result of my project, the AAA has been left with new curricular material and an established model for conducting senior health self-advocacy classes fulfilling a need recently identified by the Task Force on the Aging of Dane County and both the AAA and other area organizations are already exploring and finding innovative uses for this material.

Project Goals:

Goals for project: 1. Teach self-advocacy and health competency principles to area elders. 2. Leave the Area Agency on Aging of Dane County with curricular material that fulfills one of the needs identified by the Task Force on the Aging of Dane County.

Goals for myself: 1. Develop public-speaking & presentation skills. 2. Learn more about the specific health needs and concerns relevant to older patients.

Accomplishments:

Finished revising the training workshop facilitator's manual and developing new curricular material, presented model workshops at a variety of area senior centers, trained a replacement workshop facilitator, and left the AAA and other area agencies with materials such as handouts, "Reminder Sheets", and videos so they can easily and successfully continue the project of teaching self-advocacy and health competency principles to area elders.

Challenges of the Past:

Low attendance at workshops was an early problem. Good word-of-mouth and improved scheduling helped rectify this problem.
