Fellow Bio:
Effie grew up in an Illinois suburb and worked in a family-owned restaurant. Her mother, an NP at Rush University, influenced Effie in her desire to work with the underserved. She hopes to attend a MPH program after her second year of medical school. She recently received a grant from her former college to study doctor-patient relationships in free clinics in Athens, Greece and Wheaton, IL.

Project Description:

With the help of Alida Evans, we were able to organize a weekly activity group for the women of ARC house, a halfway house for women. We were able to sign up various med students and activity leaders in the community to run an activity on Satruday morning. Activities included yoga, kickboxing, kickball, and Scottish dancing. Volunteers could come as often or little as they wanted, and times were scheduled in advance. The program ran from March-June of 2004

Project Goals:

  • Engage women in group activity
  • Help people think about activity in their everyday lives
  • Encourage self esteem of women
  • Get involved with women in correctional environments

Accomplishments:

Since the last report, we've found a willing population and willing volunteers. We've also expanded to include not only walking, but other activities with instructors. The women agreed it was an enjoyable event and their kids were also able to participate.

Challenges and Solutions:

Sometimes, only 2 women signed up for an activity and once the ladies changed their minds a few minutes before the activity started. I had to explain to the instructor and the ladies that the class would be cancelled, but this has only happened once.
