LOCUS Completion Requirements

LOCUS is a voluntary program. If you complete the program requirements you will graduate as a LOCUS fellow. LOCUS faculty leaders or your mentor will submit a letter to the Dean's Office by the fall of your fourth year to be included in your letter of recommendation. You are responsible for providing the necessary information for this letter. You should be documenting all of your LOCUS project activities throughout your participation in the program. This documentation should be submitted by the Spring of your third year. You will also receive a certificate of achievement.

A summary of the program requirements follows (see Projects Check List for more details):

  • Submit Project Reports: Fellows are asked to submit project reports on the following schedule:
    When What
Year 1: Beginning of Semester 2 New Project Report

Year 3: Beginning of 3rd year Project Update
Year 4: Fall of 4th year 2-3 page final summary of project that includes a reflective evaluation regarding your project.

  • Present Final Project: In addition to submitting a 2-3 page final summary of your project in the fall of your 4th year, you will be expected to present your project. You can do this anytime in your 2nd, 3rd, or 4th year (most students choose to complete this requirement by the end of the second year). You may present a poster, develop a verbal presentation, publish a paper, or develop your own creative idea such as a journal or artistic creation to share the project with others. You may choose from a variety of settings to present your final project: LOCUS retreats, Department of Family Medicine fall or spring statewide meetings, regional or national meetings. Your final presentation should be planned with and approved by your project mentor.

  • Participate in Program Evaluation: Periodically throughout the program and at the end of the fourth year of medical school, you will be asked to complete a written program evaluation or participate in a focus group discussion. We will also contact you periodically following graduation from medical school to assess the impact of the program on your career.
