New Research Course offered Fall 2009
Fam Med 701: Perspectives in Multidisciplinary Clinical and Translational Research

Instructors:
Michael F. Fleming, MD, MPH, Professor, Family Medicine
David M. Vail, DVM, Professor Veterinary Medicine
Jan Greenberg, PhD, Professor Social Work
Course Description:
This multidisciplinary graduate level course introduces students to scientific methods used for clinical translational research. The course will stress the importance of multidisciplinary approaches to solving clinical questions and will incorporate multiple examples of research discoveries that were advanced through multidisciplinary collaborations. The course will emphasize a variety of research study designs and approaches that involve both qualitative and quantitative (including quasi-experimental designs) research methods to study clinically-related research questions and problems. It will provide a perspective to help prepare students for more advanced research courses.
The course will meet once per week for 2 hours and will be divided into 2 components. The first component will consist of a didactic lecture focused on a specific research area or methodology. The lectures will be given primarily by Drs. Fleming, Greenberg and Vail, with a number of guest faculty members. The second component will be co-facilitated by students and a faculty facilitator. We expect to divide up into 3-4 groups depending upon the size of the class-with no more than 4 students per group. Each student will be expected to come up with a research question in the first 2 sessions. Subsequent sessions will be utilized to discuss how the various research questions and methods presented can be used to address the student's research question. Students will also be expected to read articles posted on the course Learn@UW site.
