Patricia Tellez-Giron Awarded UW-Madison Outstanding Woman of Color

In recognition of her contributions to prevention and outreach in the Latina community, Patricia Tellez-Giron, MD, assistant professor of the UW SMPH Department of Family Medicine, has been named recipient of the first annual UW-Madison Outstanding Woman of Color award.

Some of Tellez-Giron's volunteer activities include the Madison Community Health Center, Rape Crisis Center and the La Clinica de los Campesinos. She is currently practicing at the Wingra Clinic where more than 90 percent of her patients speak only Spanish.

The awards were presented on April 7 at the UW-Madison Memorial Union. Other awards went to:

UW System 13th Annual Outstanding Woman of Color Award
Linda Greene, Evjue-Bascom professor of law, 2007 UW-Madison recipient.

First Annual UW-Madison Outstanding Women of Color Award:

  • Norma Saldivar, associate professor of theatre and drama and interim executive director of the Arts Institute
  • Mary Layoun, professor of comparative literature
  • Jackie DeWalt, director of the PEOPLE Program
  • Susana Lastarria-Cornhiel, senior scientist, Urban and Regional Planning
  • Laura Klunder, MSW, residence hall manager at University Housing

The awards celebrate the accomplishments and contributions of all UW-Madison women of color, and also recognize recipients of the Outstanding Women of Color awardees from previous years.
