The South Central Chapter of the Wisconsin Academy of Family Physicians (WAFP) sponsored its annual event in conjunction with the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health's Family Medicine Interest Group (FMIG) and set attendance records for the last four years. This year's dinner was held at a new venue, Essen Haus in Madison, and the food and facilities were wonderful.

The stars of the show were the students, as the dinner was attended by 83 medical students representing all four years. They were joined by 13 residents and spouses and 24 local family physicians and spouses, and all enjoyed a family style dinner of German favorites and good beer.

The evening included a panel discussion by ten residents and physicians practicing in various settings, showcasing the diversity and opportunity available to family physicians. The panel member's enthusiasm for personalizing the practice of medicine was evident as we discussed providing an incredible basket of services including:

  • Obstetrics
  • Sports medicine
  • Teaching
  • Research
  • Part time practice
  • International experiences
  • Hospital practice
  • Involvement in community and organized medicine

We finished with an encore performance by the medical student band, The Arrhythmias, who rocked the Essen Haus with a great mix of tunes, including, of course, a little polka. The meeting was generously sponsored by the Wisconsin Academy of Family Physicians and we thank them for their support of this annual event. Watch for next winter's WAFP FMIG event, an event that should not be missed.
