During Match Week residency programs around the country learn who their new residents are - and medical students discover where they are going for residency training. The University of Wisconsin programs are fortunate to boast a full complement of incoming residents at each program - Eau Claire, Fox Valley, Madison/Baraboo Rural Training Track, Milwaukee and Wausau.

Our Class of 2009 is comprised of 42 new residents. Fifteen hail from our own Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Healths (Medical College of Wisconsin and the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health). We also welcome residents from schools in Texas, Michigan, Virginia, New Jersey, Illinois, Washington, Poland, India, Grenada and other locations around the United States and the world. Look for introductions to the Class of 2009 from each program in upcoming newsletters.

Nationally, competition among Family Medicine Programs for members of the Class of 2009 was stiff this year. Overall, Family Medicine residencies around the country showed a slight improvement in 2006, filling 85% of their open positions versus 82% last year. Regional results for 2006 are included in the table below:

The National Resident Matching Program tracks some interesting statistics. Two tables are provided below. The first shows the number of first year positions offered in the matching program overall as well as in Family Medicine. The second table shows the percentage of Family Medicine positions offered and filled by United States senior medical students and other applicants. To put the scope into perspective, consider that there were 26,715 active applicants in the match process this year!

Now that our new residents are identified, the programs launch into action drafting and sending welcome letters, scheduling request forms, housing information, contracts, policy manuals, etc. In addition, each program plans an extensive orientation for the new residents. Orientation activities vary from program to program, but generally include team building activities, introductions to their colleagues, their clinics, the hospitals, and their new life in residency.

We heartily welcome the Class of 2009 and recognize all of the hard work the faculty, residents and staff at each program does to recruit these outstanding future family physicians! Congratulations everyone!
