Grant Awards
Alexandra Adams, MD, PhD received a grant in the amount of $93,000 over a two-year period from the New Investigator Program of the Medical Education and Research Committee (MERC). The funding source is The Wisconsin Partnership Fund for a Healthy Future. The grant is called "Supporting Caregivers in Improving Lifestyles" (SCIL), and adds an adult caregiver component to Dr. Adams' Healthy Children, Strong Families (HCSF) study on prevention of pediatric obesity in American Indian families. The HCSF provides for assessment of certain outcomes measures in both caregivers and children of enrolled families; however, the SCIL component will allow assessment of more detailed outcomes measures in the adult caregivers, including markers of metabolic syndrome and behavioral indices. Individual baseline results of these assessments will be utilized to help caregivers become more motivated to adopt personal and family level lifestyle changes.
Dennis Baumgardner, MD's small grant, "A Tale of Two Cities-'Urban' Blastomycosis," was approved for funding in the amount of $1,870 through the University of Wisconsin Department of Family Medicine. The grant funds were used almost exclusively to fund his pre-med research student, Erica Knavel, a recent graduate of Northwestern University.
Alan Wolkenstein, MSW is the principal investigator on a Department of Family Medicine small grant, "Partners of Prostate Cancer Patients: Beliefs, Experiences and Outcomes," which was funded at $4,000.
