Presentations
Alexandra Adams MD, PhD gave two presentations to community organizations on the Academic-Community Partnership at Training Sessions for the Wisconsin Partnership Grants held in Minocqua and Madison in July. The presentations were tailored to help community organizations learn how to more effectively work with academia to achieve productive collaborations on both sides of the partnerships.
John Beasley, MD presented "International Collaborations In Primary Care Research" at the AHRQ PBRN Research Conference in Washington, DC on July 21, 2005.
Craig Gjerde PhD presented a seminar at the 2005 STFM National Meeting in New Orleans on "Getting your Proposal Accepted."
Michael Grasmick, PhD, received a scholarship to present a paper at the 2005 Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality PBRN Conference in Washington DC on July 20-22 and he also represented the Wisconsin Research and Education Network (WREN). The title of his presentation was "Preferred Communication in Primary Care Surveillance," authored by Michael Grasmick, PhD, Jonathan Temte, MD, PhD and Van Yasek, PhD.
Dessie Levy, RN, MSHA, APNP, presented the talk, "Honey, Do You Think I'm Fat?" at the 12th Annual Women of the World Conference in Milwaukee.
Rich Roberts, MD, JD gave the following presentations:
- July 1 - Wisconsin Public Radio: "Medical Liability and Caps on Noneconomic Damages."
- July 30 - Plenary: "The Family Physician as Advocate" at The National Conference in Kansas City, MO
- August 6 - Plenary: "The Family Doctor and UTI" at Curatio in Chicago, IL.
- September 10 - Plenary: "Overactive Bladder" at the Antidote Conference in Baltimore, MD.
- September 16 - Plenary: "Current Trends in Family Medicine" at the Physician Insurers Association of America Underwriting Seminar in Washington, DC.
- September 17 - Plenary: "The Future of Family Medicine" at the University of Illinois in Rockford, IL.
- September 29 - Plenary: "Lies, More Lies & Lawyers - How the Law Can Suit You" and Dialogue: "Our Friend the Prostate" at the American Academy of Family Physicians Annual Scientific Assembly in San Francisco, CA
Jerry Ryan, MD spoke for the AAFP on "Insulin Resistance and Normal Pressure Hydrocephalus" in Alaska, North Dakota, North Carolina and Hawaii. He will speak in Las Vegas, South Carolina, Nebraska, Wisconsin, Tennessee and Montana in the coming months.
Marlon Mundt, MA, MS and Mike Fleming, MD, MPH presented a poster on "The Economic Cost of Chronic Pain in a Primary Care Population" at the 5th World Conference of the International Health Economics Association in Barcelona, Spain in July.
The following presentations were made during the faculty exchange trip to Beijing, China in June:
- Dave Rakel, MD and James Adam Rindfleisch, MD presented "Integrative Family Medicine: An Evolving American Concept" to family physicians and generalist physicians from Fu Xing Hospital on June 16. They also gave a presentation entitled "Integrative Medicine: An American Shift" to medical students at Capital University Medical Sciences on June 9.
- Ken Kushner, PhD gave a talk on "Screening for Depression in the Primary Care Setting" on June 9 at the Capitol University of Medical Science.
A number of Department members presented at the 38th STFM Annual Spring Conference in New Orleans, LA:
- Jeffrey Stearns, MD, Ardis Davis, MSW, Alexander Chessman, MD, Paul Paulman, MD, Christine Matson, MD and Kent Sheets, PhD presented a workshop on "The FMCR: How to Make the Most Out of This National Curriculum Resource."
- Seth Dubry, MD, Alison Lux, MD, Marge Stearns, MPH and Alan Wolkenstein, MSW presented their topic "Experiences in Teaching the Ecobiopsychosocial Approach in Early Undergraduate Medical Education."
- Deborah Simpson, PhD, Robin Helm, MD, Theresa Drewniak, PhD, Nancy Havas, MD and Suzanne Gehl, MD held a lecture-discussion on "Identifying the Critical Elements that Result in Faculty Adoption of Redeveloped Educational Resources."
- Karla Hemesath, PhD and Nancy Havas, MD led a peer session-faculty development on "I Say Potato, You Say Potatoe: Residents and Advisors."
