2006 DFM Statewide Meeting in October

The 2006 Fall Department of Family Medicine Statewide Meeting is approaching quickly. Thursday, October 19 and Friday, October 20 are planned with many activities. Overnight guest room reservations can be made until September 19, 2006 by calling the Edgewater Hotel at (608) 256-9071 or toll free (800) 922-5512 and requesting the Department of Family Medicine block #8802.

Please make note of the upcoming activities for Thursday:

  • The day will begin with a continental breakfast and our keynote speaker, Wayne Sotile, PhD, who is a pioneer in the field of health psychology.
  • Paul Smith, MD will speak on "Health Literacy: What is it and what can we do about it?"
  • Our interactive game session, tentatively planned, will follow.
  • At lunch we will acknowledge our Service Award recipients and present the Marc Hansen Lecture Award.
  • Richard G. Roberts, MD, JD will begin the afternoon session presenting "The New, Improved and Really Far-out Future of Family Medicine."
  • David Dadds will lead an interactive workshop as a follow-up to the previous strategic plan for the Department.
  • The Renner Reception featuring the presentation to Charles Shabino, MD, the recipient of this year's John H. Renner Wisconsin Idea Award, and dinner will end the day's events.

The Friday morning activities are as follows:

  • David Rakel, MD will present "Peace in Academia: An Oxymoron or a Conscious Choice?"
  • Cindy Haq, MD will then discuss "Strategies to Improve the Gender Climate in the DFM."
  • Following these morning talks, we will have four very interesting and informative breakout sessions:
    • "Complexity in Family Medicine" - Jon Temte, MD, PhD
    • "Technology Showcase" - Michelle Wood, MS and Janet Reschke
    • "Being the Architect of Your Career" - Don Schutt, Human Resource Development Office
    • "Get the Facts about Retirement and Financial Planning" - Louise Googins, Googins & Co.
  • The awards luncheon will conclude our program and feature the Scheckler Prizes for Research, Excellence Awards and QI Awards, among others.

Registration to these activities is on a first-come-first-served basis, so please complete the registration form as soon as possible to ensure a spot in your desired sessions.
