This past year Stan Livingston, MD, Nancy Pandhi, MD and Ann Evensen, MD successfully completed the Department of Family Medicine Master Teacher Fellowship. This program, developed and led by Craig Gjerde, PhD, Jim Shropshire, MD and Jake Prunuske, MD, MSPH consisted of a series of workshops that provided instruction and experiences for faculty to develop their teaching skills. Workshops addressed skills for:

  • Mentoring
  • Communication
  • Small group facilitation
  • Providing feedback
  • Use of video as an instruction tool
  • Precepting in a busy office practice

Special thanks to Kim Lansing, Jerry Ryan, MD and Doug Smith, MD for leading educational sessions. The program culminated with a competency-based Objective Structured Teaching Exam developed by Jim Shropshire, MD. This exam used the Health Sciences Learning Center (HSLC) Clinical Assessment Center and six standardized students, and was a great success. Drs. Livingston, Pandhi and Evensen will each be leading Primary Care Clerkship small group sessions this year. Drs. Gjerde, Shropshire and Prunuske will be presenting the program at the 34th Annual Predoctoral Education Conference on January 24-27, 2008 in Portland, OR.

Jim Shropshire, MD has developed the "4-GET" model for improving communication between doctors and patients when using an electronic health record. Dr. Shropshire will be leading a workshop at the 34th Annual Predoctoral Education Conference on January 24-27, 2008 in Portland, OR to disseminate this model.
