The College Health Intervention Projects

Stacey Balousek

The CHIPs (College Health Intervention Projects) will be examining the efficacy of combined interventions focused on a variety of student health issues, including tobacco and alcohol use, exercise, nutrition, mental health, and high risk sexual behaviors. Michael Fleming, MD, MPH is the principal investigator along with co-investigators Paul Grossberg MD, David Brown PhD and Scott Spear, MD. Stacey Balousek is the project manager, and Judie Pfeifer, M.Ed and
Georgiana Wilton, PhD are Educational Consultants. They are joined on the research team by Larissa Zakletskaia, MA, PhD, Database Manager,
Marlon Mundt, MA, MS, Data Analyst, and researchers Cindy Klessig and
Ellyn Staffacher.

Students will be entered into the trial at their campus student health centers based on their answers to a Health Screening Survey and a baseline interview. The intervention will be tailored to the individual student's needs and include components to address health issues identified in the survey and interview.

Students from several college campuses in North America will fill out a total of 20,000 Health Screening Surveys. Based on their answers in relation to the target behaviors, 2,500 will be invited to come in for a face-to-face baseline interview. We estimate that 1,000 of those students will both qualify for the interventions and agree to take part. Half of these students will receive a health resources booklet, and take part in two Clinician interventions, along with follow-up phone calls at 6, 12, 18 and 24 months to assess changes in health behaviors. The remaining 500 will receive a health resources booklet and take part in the 6, 12, 18 and 24-month follow-up phone calls.
