Thank you to all who participated in celebrating our Fall 2005 DFM Statewide Meeting on September 29-30 at the Concourse Hotel. The theme for this year's event was "35 Years of the DFM: A Celebration and Beyond." With that in mind, the meeting included presentations on the "Then and Now" of the DFM. John Frey, MD, Marc Hansen, MD and Bill Scheckler, MD gave a presentation on a "Historical View of the Department of Family Medicine and a View of the Future."

On Thursday, William Cayley, MD received the Marc Hansen Lectureship Award and gave his talk entitled "Curing, Caring and Comforting." Bill Schwab, MD facilitated an interactive history of the Department in a Jeopardy format which included 3 competing teams in a challenging question-and-answer foray. Other awards during the luncheon included:

  • Faculty Excellence Awards
  • Academic Staff Excellence Awards
  • James E. Davis Quality Improvement Award
  • William Scheckler Research Awards
  • Classified Staff Awards, new this year

A list of those honored can be located in the Scholarly Accomplishments section of this newsletter. After lunch, we acknowledged 35 years of the Department of Family Medicine with a cake celebration of everyone's outstanding contributions to the Department.

In the afternoon, David Dadds, MS and Aaron Buchko, PhD, facilitated a follow-up interactive workshop session relating to our new DFM strategic plan and the future of our Department. Thursday evening we celebrated at a reception in the Capitol Ballroom where everyone had a chance to meet and converse with colleagues followed by the John H. Renner, MD Wisconsin Idea Dinner and Award. The award was presented to Chick Fenlon, MD, Emeritus Professor from Fox Valley.

Friday morning, after a continental breakfast, we honored Steve Pearson, MA, LPC, Director of the Employee Assistance Office, with his presentation, "Nurturing Workplace Relationships During Times of Transition."
