Is My PC Ready to be a Doorstop?
Work Computers
A number of requests have been presented to the ITS (Information Technology Services) staff regarding the age of a staff member's PC and when it will come up for replacement. Under the guidelines of the PC Replacement Policy, ITS is responsible for servicing Department of Family Medicine purchased computers and maintaining an inventory list and replacement schedule. In the next six months, you will see us deploy over 250 new machines statewide to replace computers that are four years old or older. Additionally, we will play a role in the coordination and installation of Winterm devices in clinic exam rooms.
Heading up the desktop replacement schedule and planning is Mary Nelson. Mary has done a great job of tracking machines in the Department, and especially working with clinic managers to assess and address pc needs. We have developed standards for both desktop and laptop machines and can work with you to modify those specifications, if necessary, to fit your needs. If you need to purchase a machine and need assistance with specifications, you can contact Mary Nelson.
ITS doesn't service computers purchased with personal funds or computers purchased by other entities such as the UW Medical Foundation or UW Hospital and Clinics. Limited DFM staff and the priorities of servicing DFM owned equipment do not allow for support of personally owned devices. Additionally, DFM ITS staff doesn't have authority to service computers owned and managed by other entities, which often have different configurations and specifications.
Laptops
The ITS staff is currently working on a project to audit laptops within the DFM. The completed audit will be used to assist us in maintaining a systematic replacement process. Our goal is to create a standard platform of hardware and software for DFM purchased laptops. The audit process will also include updating software for increased security and reliability.
