New TIBS Video Available on the Internet
Richard L. Brown MD, MPH and Judie Pfeifer, MEd have developed an educational video to accompany their Wisconsin Tobacco Intervention Basic Skills Guide (TIBS). This manual is intended to train health professionals in brief interventions for tobacco users.
The video depicts two primary care visits with a patient who has bronchitis. In the first visit, the interviewer helps the patient consider whether to try to quit smoking. In the second visit, the patient is ready for help. The video demonstrates motivational interviewing skills, which research has shown are effective in promoting change in a variety of health behaviors.
Four versions of the videotape were created for various instructional settings and purposes:
- The first version contains captions labeling the steps and skills being shown.
- The second version contains picture-in-picture video segments of the interviewer providing more detailed instructional commentary.
- The third version has captions and instructional commentary.
- The fourth version has just the video minus captions and commentary.
The video was developed for training medical students. It could also be used for training residents, practicing physicians, faculty physicians, and other healthcare professionals.
As of October 1, the video will be available on the Family Medicine Website at:

The guide and video were prepared as part of the Predoctoral Training Grant in Primary Care, which was funded by the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) of the US Department of Health and Human Services.
