UW Programs Recruit in Kansas City

Eighteen residents and faculty from all the University of Wisconsin Family Medicine programs donned red shirts and recruited up a storm at the Annual Fair for Students and Residents sponsored by the American Academy of Family Physicians in Kansas City. All the Family Medicine programs in the State have been clustering their booths together for the past several years and it seems to be paying off in recognition of Wisconsin. We had almost twice as many students visit our booth and complete contact sheets this year than in 2004. Most were fourth-year medical students seriously looking at residency programs. I spoke with recruiters from several other states that marveled at our statewide camaraderie.

The Annual AAFP Fair for Students and Residents has had declining attendance for the past few years, but this year we saw a slight increase: 680 students attended in 2005 and 651 attended in 2004. This is an important fair for us because it is the only opportunity for students from all over the country to be introduced to the State of Wisconsin and its programs. Many students have never visited Wisconsin, so it takes a lot to get their attention. We use banners, handouts, colorful shirts and happy residents to help make our statement.

Thanks to both attendees and program staff for all your help in making this event successful.
