Dennis Baumgardner, MD had a poster titled "Urban Blastomycosis: A Tale of Two Cities" (co-authored by Knavel E., Steber D. and Geoffrey Swain, MD, MPH) accepted for presentation at the IX International Conference on Paracoccidioidomycosis, Aguas de Lindoia in Sao Paulo, Brazil on October 4, 2005 and the 33rd Annual Meeting, North American Primary Care Research Group in Quebec City, Canada on October 15-18, 2005.
John Frey, MD was the keynote speaker at the Medical College of Wisconsin White Coat Ceremony for entering medical students. Dr. Frey gave the Compassion in Medicine Lecture entitled "A Lifetime of Careful Listening" on August 11 in Milwaukee.
Mark Marnocha, MS, PhD co-presented with Bailey, M. and Kort, E. "Stories, Poems, Stress, and Health" at the Wisconsin Psychological Association Summer CE Workshop in Waupaca.
David Rakel, MD spoke on "Integrative Medicine: Bringing Health Oriented Medicine into a Disease Oriented Model" at the Monroe Clinic and Hospital Grand Rounds in Monroe, WI on September 9. Additionally, Dr. Rakel gave a plenary talk along with his father, Robert Rakel, MD, on "Family Medicine, Relationships and the Mind: A Vision of Health Across Two Generations" at the 26th Forum for Behavioral Science in Family Medicine in Chicago, Il on September 17.
Jon Temte, MD, PhD gave three presentations at the AAFP Annual Scientific Assembly in San Francisco, CA on September 28 through October 2:
- "Update on Childhood and Adolescent Immunizations"
- "Adult Immunizations and Improving Immunization Rate in Your Practice: 2005 Update"
- "Implementing a Practice Based Research Network Study" (Parts I and II).
A number of Department members provided the following at the 2005 NAPCRG conference in Quebec City, Quebec on October 15 through October 18:
- Jon Temte, MD, PhD along with DeHaven M, and Gimel N. presented a workshop on "Just Do(ing) it: Improving Residency-Based Research and Scholarly Activity."
- Jon Temte, MD, PhD, Van Yasek, PhD, Michael Grasmick, PhD, and Paul Smith, MD presented a paper titled "Preferred Communication Methods in Primary Care Surveillance."
Jennifer J. Weibel DO, an osteopathic intern in Fox Valley, along with K. Jeinking and T. Glonek, of the Midwestern University/Chicago College of Osteopathic Medicine, presented a research project at the annual American Osteopathic Association meeting held in Orlando, FL. in October. The project, "Ketogenesis in Ultra Marathon Runners Does Not Impair Performance," investigated whether race-induced ketone production affects the performance of ultra marathon (ultra distance) runners.
Georgiana Wilton, PhD and Patricia Cameron, MS presented a seminar entitled "Understanding Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders from Birth to Adulthood" to an international audience of physicians, health and social service providers, and foster care professionals at the International Foster Care Organization Biennial Conference in Madison, Wisconsin. This is the first time this international conference had been in the United States for nearly 20 years.
