Brian Arndt, MD, a third-year resident at the Madison Family Medicine residency program, was awarded an Ambulatory Care Innovation Grant in the amount of $25,000 for the project "Cost-effectiveness analysis of implementing a chronic care manager position for multidisciplinary chronic disease management in the outpatient clinic setting." This project will take place at the Wingra and Northeast clinics over the next 12 months and build on projects he has been working on with both the Belleville clinic and Verona clinic to improve the care of patients with diabetes and other chronic health conditions.


Kristen Marjorie Green Lerberg, MD, a third-year resident at the Madison Family Medicine residency program, received a Department of Family Medicine Small Grant in the amount of $4000 to be used as funding for her "International Adoption National Clinic Practice Survey."


David Rabago, MD was recently awarded New Investigator Grants in the amount of $100,000 for his project, "Magnetic Resonance Imaging in a Study of Prolotherapy for Knee Osteoarthritis" by the Medical Education and Research Committee (MERC) at the Wisconsin Partnership Program at the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health (SMPH).


Geoffrey R. Swain, MD, MPH is the Academic Partner on a three-year, $449,376 grant awarded to the City of Milwaukee Health Department from the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health Partnership Fund. The grant program will start in March, 2007 and will fund the Milwaukee Nurse-Family Partnership (NFP) Program, an evidence-based, highly effective home visitation model that aims to improve birth and health outcomes for children and families of first-time, at-risk mothers.


The Wisconsin Partnership Program at the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health (SMPH) awarded 25 grants totaling approximately $6.2 million for community partnerships designed to improve the health of the people of Wisconsin:

  • Patricia Tellez-Giron, MD (Academic Partner) Planned Parenthood of Wisconsin, Inc. (Dane County) was awarded $450,000 for "Taking Care of Me: A Cancer Education and Screening Promotion Program for Hispanic/Latina Women."

  • Bruce Barrett, MD, PhD, MSPH (Academic Partner) Advocacy and Benefits Counseling for Health (Statewide) was awarded $447,699 for "HealthWatch Wisconsin."

  • Geoffrey Swain, MD, MPH (Academic Partner) City of Milwaukee Health Department (City of Milwaukee) was awarded $449,376 for the "Milwaukee Nurse-Family Partnership Program."

  • Michael Fleming, MD, MPH (Academic Partner) Columbia County Connects Coalition (Columbia County) was awarded $450,000 for "Project Connect."

  • Susan Skochelak, MD, MPH and Roberta Riportella PhD, University of Wisconsin School of Human Ecology and UW Extension (Academic Partners) Covering Kids and Families - Wisconsin (Statewide) was awarded $446,185 for "Coordinating Partnerships to Improve Access to Public Health Coverage."

  • Byron Crouse, MD (Academic Partner) Rural Health Development Council (Jackson, Sauk, and Sawyer Counties) was awarded $299,815 for "Strong Rural Communities Initiative."

  • Kathleen Oriel, MD, MS (Academic Partner) Diverse and Resilient, Inc. (Dane, Eau Claire, La Crosse, Marathon, and Milwaukee Counties) was awarded $48,760 for "Preventing Substance Abuse Among LGBTQ Youth in Wisconsin."

  • Kristen Reynolds, MD (Academic Partner) Milwaukee County Breastfeeding Coalition (Milwaukee Co) was awarded $49,454 for "Increasing Breastfeeding Rates in Milwaukee County."
