The UW Health Eau Claire Family Medicine Clinic is the 2009 recipient of the Chippewa Valley Association for Career and Technical Education's (CVACTE) C. L. Greiber Award.

Eau Claire Residency Program and Regional Campus Director Richard McClaflin, MD, accepted the award on behalf of the clinic. The clinic was recognized on two separate occasions in February—one in Eau Claire and one in Appleton—as part of National Career and Technical Education Month.

The CVACTE presents the Greiber award to one organization in West Central Wisconsin each year for its outstanding contribution to the improvement, promotion, and development of career, technical, and adult education.

The Eau Claire clinic's contributions include:

  • Providing Chippewa Valley Technical College (CVTC) students with a variety of health services at affordable costs;
  • Collaborating with CVTC health programs to develop simulation training experiences for students;
  • Working with CVTC to explore whether or not to pursue Federally Qualified Health Center status;
  • Serving as a resource for CVTC health programs on questions concerning immunizations and diseases; and
  • Serving as a clinical site for some health students.

The Department of Family Medicine's (DFM) Eau Claire campus has had an active, thriving partnership with CVTC. The clinic and the Eau Claire residency program are both located in the state-of-the-art Health Education Center, which was developed jointly with CVTC in 2004.

"The residency's partnership with CVTC has allowed both of us to have state-of-the equipment and educational resources," Dr. McClaflin said. "Opening our thinking to wider educational goals has allowed exciting new ventures in joint education, including provision of dental hygiene services in our clinic and cooperative teaching using CVTC's Human Patient Simulator laboratory."

"We are delighted to receive this award, and even more delighted that our relationship with CVTC helps us both achieve what neither could achieve alone," he added. "This benefits our learners and the western Wisconsin region they will ultimately serve."
