Another Successful Procedure Fair
The Department of Family Medicine hosted the annual Procedure Skills Workshop at the University of Wisconsin Health Sciences Learning Center. The event was attended by approximately eighty medical students, as well as 8 high school students representing the group Involving Health Profession Mentor Program (HPMP). HPMP pairs underserved high school students interested in a career in healthcare with medicine, nurse, and physician assistant student mentors.
Registration and dinner began at 5:45 p.m., followed by an opening address by Bill Schwab, MD. The hands-on learning workshops covered topics such as:
- Gynecology
- Ultrasound
- Casting/Taping/Splinting
- EKG
- Suturing
- OB Basic
- OB Advanced
- Joint Injection
The workshops were taught by many wonderful Department of Family Medicine residents, athletic trainers and faculty including:
- David Rakel, MD,
- Dennis Breen, MD,
- Terri Kulie, MD,
- Beth Potter, MD,
- Kathleen Carr, MD,
- Jim Shropshire, MD,
- Gerald Ryan, MD,
- Lee Dresang, MD,
- David Rabago, MD,
- Luke Fortney, MD,
- Rian Podien, MD, and
- Don Carufel-Wert, MD.
Students attended two workshops of their choice, each one hour long. With plenty of teaching help, they received one-on-one attention throughout the night from faculty and residents.
The night concluded with Culver's providing ice cream in the main atrium. The event filled up shortly after registration opened, proving its importance to medical students and their interest in Family Medicine. A very special thank you to all who lent their time to help teach, assist, coordinate and support this year's event.
