Arthur Kaufman, MD, chair of family and community medicine at the University of New Mexico (UNM), is the recipient of the Department of Family Medicine (DFM)'s 2008 Eugene and Linda Farley Lectureship.

The Farley Lecture is planned for September 2008 and will consist of three events:

  • A presentation to the DFM's fellowship seminar;
  • A reception for faculty and staff of the DFM and other School of Medicine and Public Health departments;
  • A videoconferenced presentation with the DFM's statewide campuses, followed by a live question and answer session.

About Dr. Kaufman

A specialist in both family medicine and internal medicine, Dr. Kaufman joined UNM's Department of Family and Community Medicine in 1974. His education and prior experience are as follows:

  • MD, State University of New York Downstate Medical Center, New York, NY
  • Internal Medicine Residency, St. Vincent's Hospital, New York, NY
  • Served in the Indian Health Service in South Dakota and New Mexico

Dr. Kaufman's interests are in creating innovative education and service models to address community, indigent, rural and population health needs.

About the Farley Lecture

Established in 1993, the Eugene and Linda Farley Lecture is designed to stimulate ideas and discussion through visits by select candidates. Candidates' areas of interest include:

  • The humanistic aspects of medicine
  • Medical ethics
  • Social consciousness
  • Philosophy of family medicine
  • Health care reform
  • Generalist education
  • Cross-cultural concerns in medicine

The Farley lecture was named after Eugene Farley, MD, one of the recognized founders of the specialty of family medicine and DFM chair from 1982-1992. Dr. Farley has been a life-long activist for social responsibility and the health of underserved populations.
