John Frey, MD was the Keynote Speaker and Judge at the University of Illinois - Chicago Department of Family Medicine Research Day in Chicago, IL. His presentation was on "The Medical School Meets the Community: New Opportunities for Community Based Research."


Lu Marchand, MD presented along with Todd Detar, MD the seminar "Implementing the Healer's Art Course in Medical Student Education" at the STFM Conference on Families and Health in Austin, TX.

David Rakel, MD gave the following presentations:

  • "Nutritional Supplements and Mind-Body Influences in Cardiovascular Health" at the Preventive Cardiovascular Nurses Association thirteenth Annual Symposium in Minneapolis, MN.
  • "Creating Optimal Healing Environments," with Mark Marnocha, MS, PhD and Bruce Barrett, MD, PhD at the Wisconsin Psychology Association Annual Convention in Madison, WI in April.
  • "Integrative Medicine: A focus on Health" at the University of Wisconsin Annual Primary Care Refresher Course in Madison, WI.
  • "Integrative Medicine and Naturopathic Medicine: Finding Common Ground" (keynote speaker) at the Wisconsin Naturopathic Physicians Association Annual Meeting in Madison, WI.
  • "Nutrition and Mind-Body Influences in Women and Their Babies" at the University of Wisconsin Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology Grand Rounds in Madison, WI in May.
  • "Integrative Medicine: The Science of Health and Healing" at the Scott Thompson Memorial Lecture Progress in Primary Care Conference, Aurora Health Care in Waukesha, WI in May.

  • "Acute and Preventive Treatment of Migraine" and "Case Studies in Headache" at the UW CME Headache Symposium.

Bill Schwab, MD gave the following presentations:

  • "Quality Health Care for Adults with Special Needs: The New Vision" and "The Medical Evaluation of Behavioral Change - An Approach for the Primary Care Clinician" at Developmental Disabilities: Update for Health Professional organized by the University of California, San Francisco School of Medicine in San Francisco.
  • "Family-Centered Care" at Families as Partners, a conference convened by the children's hospital at St. Mary's Hospital in Duluth, Minnesota.
  • Dr. Schwab was also on the seminar faculty at "Hospitals Moving Forward with Patient- and Family-Centered Care" in Portland, Maine, organized by the Institute for Family-Centered Care with three Maine hospitals and the state's department of health. Participants from 22 states and three countries attended. Dr. Schwab gave several large and small group presentations.

Jon Temte, MD, PhD gave the following presentations:

  • "Influenza Vaccine Use in Family Medicine: 2004-2006" at the 41st National Immunization Conference in March in Kansas City, MO. (presented along with Young H and Schoof B)
  • "Human Papillomavirus Vaccine" at the Wisconsin Legislative Policy Forum in Madison, WI.
  • "2007 Vaccine Update" at Watertown Memorial Hospital in May in Watertown, WI.
  • "Human Papillomavirus Vaccine: An Opportunity for Prevention" at the Wisconsin Nurses Association Advanced Practice Nurse Forum, 21st Annual Pharmacology and Clinical Update in May in La Crosse, WI.

The following presentations were given at the American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP) Residency Program Solutions conference in Kansas City:

  • Mark Thompson, MD and Lee Vogel, MD presented "CMS Distress/Surviving a GME Audit and Loss of Resident FTEs."
  • Lou Sanner, MD, MSPH, along with William Gillanders, MD, presented "They Are Out to Get You! Lessons from the Intermediary Settlement Audits."
  • Mark Thompson, MD presented "Recruiting the Forgotten Half; Spousal/Significant Other Recruitment."

The following presentations were given at the 40th STFM Annual Spring Conference in Chicago, IL:

  • Byron Crouse, MD, Jim Davis, MD, MS and Maggie Dugan, MS, FNP presented "From Worst to First: Attaining Excellence in Childhood Immunizations in Statewide Residency Clinics Using QI."
  • Lu Marchand, MD presented "Integrative End of Life Care: Combining Conventional and Alternative Evidence-based Medicine." Dr. Marchand also presented along with Gowri Anandarajah, MD, Stephen Kliewer, Dmin, and Frederic Craigie, PhD. "Developing Core Competencies in Spirituality and Patient Care for Family Medicine Residency Education."
  • Melissa Stiles, MD, Beth Potter, MD, Anne-Marie Lozeau, MD and Janet Reschke gave a presentation titled "RU Ready 4 NetGen?: Incorporating Emerging Technologies Into Residency Education."
  • Beth Potter, MD and Janet Reschke facilitated a Breakfast Session titled "Podcasting-How Does It Fit into Your Residency Program?"
  • Bruce Barrett, MD, PhD presented a research project "Assessing Clinical Significance in Common Cold: Sufficiently Important Difference."
  • Jeffrey A. Stearns, MD along with Carol Bland, MD, John Frey, MD, Johnathan Rodnick, MD and William Shore, MD presented "When I am 64: Faculty Development for Senior Faculty - And Those Who Will Be."
  • Helen Luce DO along with Marguerite Elliott DO, MS; David Yens PhD; Charles Henley DO, MPH; Howard Teitelbaum DO, PhD and Eugene Mochan DO, PhD presented "A Mini-Course in Osteopathic Medicine for the Allopathic Physician."
  • Teresa Kulie, MD, National Chair of STFM's Group on Portfolios, hosted a breakfast where "Portfolio Use in Medical Education" was discussed.
