GroupWise and Novell Roll-Out

Contributors: Kathy McCain

Over the past several months, almost all Department employees have been switched from using Eudora to GroupWise for their email.

Mary Nelson has been instrumental in the installation of GroupWise on all computers at Northeast, Verona and Wingra clinics. She has provided one-on-one training to everyone who has made this change.

Mike Allen of Appleton, Jim Coppage of Eau Claire, Nichole Hanke of Wausau and Kathy McCainat Belleville have also installed GroupWise and provided training to the employees at these clinics. In addition, Janet Reschke has given several, more advanced, training sessions at the Department's central office on Mills Street.

This conversion has many benefits which include: better HelpDesk support, spam and virus control, integrated address books (UW DFM, UW Madison, UWMF), conference room scheduling, loaner laptop and projector scheduling and web access from anywhere in the world to name a few.

In addition to the GroupWise roll-out, IS has been working diligently to provide access to our Novell servers to the following clinics: Northeast, Verona, Wausau and Wingra. Prior to this, only Appleton, Belleville, Eau Claire and the Department's central office had a Novell network in place. Again, Mary Nelson was pivotal in the installation of the Novell Client software on all computers at Northeast, Verona and Wingra, with assistance from Nichole Hanke at Wausau.

Benefits of our Novell network include the following: a secure location for data file storage, nightly back up of all data, the ability to remotely control desktops, the ability to log into any computer in the Department and much more.

Training for using GroupWise and the Novell network has begun at Verona and Wingra clinics provided by Kathy McCain, Mary Nelson, Janet Reschke and Michelle Wood, MS. In addition, Michelle Wood has introduced two newly implemented IS policies to everyone. This training will continue at these clinics, as well as Northeast and Wausau in the coming months.
