Celebrating Winners at the 2008 Hansen/Renner Awards Dinner
Department of Family Medicine (DFM) faculty and staff from around Wisconsin gathered at Madison's Edgewater Hotel on October 29 for a dinner to celebrate recipients of the 2008 Marc Hansen, MD, Lectureship Award, the John H. Renner, MD, Wisconsin Idea Award and several other awards.
Pfizer Teacher Development Award Winner
After welcoming everyone, DFM Chair Valerie Gilchrist, MD, presented the first award of the evening: the 2008 Pfizer Teacher Development Award, to Daniel Schaefer, MD, a family physician in Mt. Horeb, Wisconsin. The Pfizer award, administered by the American Academy of Family Physicians Foundation, recognizes community-based family physicians who combine clinical practice with part-time teaching of family medicine.
James E. Davis Quality Improvement Award Winners
Dr. Gilchrist then presented the 2008 James E. Davis Quality Improvement Awards (link to related story in Clinical News) to the Aurora UW Family Practice Center and the UW Health Verona clinic.
The Davis Award recognizes outstanding quality projects in the department; this year's winning projects focused on improving screening for cervical cancer and osteoporosis.
History of the Hansen/Renner Awards
James E. Davis, MD, then presented a brief history of the Hansen/Renner awards.
The Marc Hansen Lectureship Award, established in 1994, honors Marc Hansen, MD, a founder of one of the nation's first family medicine residencies and an important voice in the development of primary care. The award honors a junior faculty member who has made a substantial contribution to student and resident education.
The John H. Renner, MD, Wisconsin Idea Award, established in 2002, recognizes an individual who has demonstrated an exemplary commitment to family practice and the health needs of the people of Wisconsin, as envisioned by Dr. Renner.
Marc Hansen, MD, Lectureship Award Winner
DFM Associate Professor Lou Sanner, MD, MSPH, introduced Anne-Marie Lozeau, MD, MS, the 2008 Hansen lecturer. Dr. Lozeau is an assistant professor at the DFM who practices at the Northeast Family Medical Center.
Dr. Lozeau's presentation, "Teaching NetGen: Technology We Can't Ignore," focused on the important role of information technology in resident and medical student education, especially among people born between 1980 and 2003 ("NetGen").
John H. Renner, MD, Wisconsin Idea Award
DFM Associate Professor and Fox Valley Residency Program Director Lee Vogel, MD, introduced John Sender, recipient of the 2008 John H. Renner Wisconsin Idea Award. John is the federal relations and strategic communications manager for the University of Wisconsin Medical Foundation.
John received the Renner award for working on behalf of the DFM with the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services to assure GME funding for the Fox Valley residency program.
The DFM congratulates all the award winners and thanks all who attended. Special thanks go to Armando Vera, who served as photographer for the event.
