Osteopathic Program Quick Facts

How Many Osteopathic Positions are Available?

The University of Wisconsin Osteopathic Family Medicine Program is approved for 35 positions statewide. These positions are not assigned to specific locations or year of training, so flexibility exists for residents to apply at programs which seem best suited to individual needs. For 2009-2010, 26 of the 35 statewide positions are filled.

Where are the Positions?

The positions are distributed among the University of Wisconsin Residency Program sites: Baraboo, Eau Claire/Augusta, Fox Valley, Madison, Milwaukee (Aurora), and Wausau based on applicant interest and program preferences.

Background and Accreditation:

The University of Wisconsin Family Medicine programs have a long and successful history of training osteopathic residents. The residency programs became dual accredited by the AOA/ACOFP and ACGME in 2002 and the statewide osteopathic residency program is a member of the Osteopathic Postdoctoral Training Institute at Kirksville (OPTIK).

Osteopathic Manipulatiave Treatment (OMT):

Program locations have board certified osteopathic faculty members. Residents have opportunities to use OMT within the continuity clinic setting and may have opportunities to gain additional experience in a specialized OMT clinic. Each year, the osteopathic residents from all the program sites gather together for three, day-long workshops on OMM/OMT, taught by faculty from Des Moines University. Two of these sessions are offered in conjunction with the Wisconsin Association of Osteopathic Physicians and Surgeons (WAOPS) annual CME events.
