| Professional Memberships |
Membership in the American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP) and the Wisconsin Academy of Family Physicians (WAFP) is paid for all residents. For osteopathic residents, membership is also paid for the American Osteopathic Association (AOA) and the American College of Osteopathic Family Physicians (ACOFP). |
| Life Support Courses |
Depending on the program, fees may be covered for the following life support courses:

| Professional Development |
Funds are provided to attend conferences; purchase medical books, journals and educational software; purchase a PDA upon entry into the program; and reimburse other approved professional development expenses. Fund amounts:

| Paid Time Away | |
| Personal Days | Residents receive paid time away for personal use such as vacation, illness or injury, or job interviews. First-year residents receive 15 days, and second- and third-year receive 20 days. |
| Holidays |
Paid holidays are:
Residents may be off on these days as scheduling for patient care coverage permits. |
| Professional Development | Second- and third-year residents may take five additional paid days to attend approved professional conferences and other professional development activities. |
| Life Support Courses | Paid time away is provided for participation in the following life support courses: ACLS, ACLS re-certification, NRP, PALS, ATLS, and ALSO. |
| Leave of Absences |
The UW-DFM recognizes that residents may occasionally need to be away for longer periods of time for parental leave, medical conditions, or other personal/family matters. Leaves of absence are arranged in collaboration with the local program director. Residents are eligible for up to one month of paid leave in certain circumstances. A second month of paid leave may be available at the discretion of the program director. The UW-DFM complies fully with Family and Medical Leave Act guidelines, permitting up to 12 weeks of unpaid leave. |
| Insurance & Retirement | |
| Group Health Insurance | As employees of the State of Wisconsin, residents and their dependents may choose from several comprehensive health insurance plans. |
| Dental Insurance | Several health insurance plans include basic dental coverage. Residents may purchase additional dental coverage if desired. |
| Vision Care Insurance | Several health insurance plans include basic vision care coverage. Residents may purchase additional vision care coverage if desired. |
| Group Life Insurance | During the enrollment period, individual and family group term life insurance is available without evidence of insurability. Residents may also purchase additional life insurance coverage with evidence of insurability. |
| Long-Term Disability Insurance | Residents receive long-term disability insurance coverage. In the event of a covered disability, benefits are provided according to policy guidelines. |
| AD&D Insurance | Accidental Death and Dismemberment insurance (AD&D) provides a benefit in the event of accidental loss of life, sight, or limb, according to guidelines of the policy. |
| Malpractice Insurance | Malpractice coverage and comprehensive liability protection is provided for any malpractice incident arising out of a resident's participation in the educational program. |
| Employee Reimbursement Accounts (ERA) | Residents may choose to participate in the ERA program, which permits the use of pre-tax income for selected expenses related to health and dental insurance, approved out-of-pocket health care costs, and dependent day care. |
| Tax-Sheltered Annuity (TSA) | Residents may contribute to a retirement plan on a pre-tax basis. These contributions are 100% vested and are tax deferred until withdrawn, most commonly during retirement. |
| Additional Benefits | |
| Resident Support | Resident support and social activities with peers are essential components of each UW-DFM residency program. These vary by program, and may include retreats, dinners, parties, resident support groups, and more. Additionally, the UW Employee Assistance Office offers residents confidential support and counseling for work-related and personal issues. |
| Meals | Meals may be provided at no charge for residents during local program conferences, and while on hospital call or hospital services. |
| Pagers | Pagers and associated monthly fees are provided at no cost to residents. |
| Research Assistance | Residents may apply for small grant funding from the UW-DFM. Additionally, research staff and principal investigators are available for guidance and assistance for residents interested in research. |
| Local Program Benefits | Each program may offer benefits such as travel stipends, lab coats, relocation expenses, parking, and more. Check with the local program director or education coordinator for details. |
