John Kalmanek, MD (he/him), is passionate about primary care; he enjoys patient education, preventive medicine, community health, and providing care for marginalized populations. John is from Homer Glen, IL and he earned his bachelor’s degree in Science-Business from the University of Notre Dame. He went on to earn his medical degree from the University of Virginia. While there, he developed his interests in learner-centered teaching by serving as a peer mentor for other students and leading health education classes at a local jail. During a “Caring for Refugees” elective, he discovered a passion for the challenge and value of providing care for refugee patients. He also participated in the Generalist Scholars Program, which allowed him to focus on developing as a primary care physician who is devoted to holistically improving the lives of others. John worked with an interdisciplinary team of students to create a mobile application designed to make it easier for caregivers to receive help; this experience fueled his passion for innovation and the team-based, multidisciplinary approach to healthcare. He loves playing and watching sports (go Bears!) and he enjoys playing board games with friends and trying new foods.
