The University of Wisconsin Department of Family Medicine and Community Health (DFMCH) is proud that 35 fourth-year UW School of Medicine and Public Health (UWSMPH) students matched into family medicine residency programs nationwide on March 15, 2019.

They represented 18.9 percent of the graduating class, again making family medicine the most-matched specialty among SMPH seniors.

UWSMPH seniors’ interest in family medicine is more than double the national average. According to the American Academy of Family Physicians, in 2019, only 9.1 percent of U.S. medical school seniors nationwide matched into the specialty.

Of those 35 UWSMPH students entering family medicine, 13 (37.1 percent) are entering one of the eight statewide residency programs sponsored by or partnered with the DFMCH. Five will be in the Madison residency, three will be in the La Crosse residency, two will be in the Milwaukee residency, one will be in the Lakeland RTT and two will be in the Waukesha residency.

In June, the DFMCH will welcome a total of 55 new physicians into its residency programs. Besides the 13 coming from the UWSMPH, five are coming from the Medical College of Wisconsin and four are coming from other Big 10 universities (University of Michigan, Michigan State University and the Ohio State University).

In addition, 16 of the incoming DFMCH residents will be doctors of osteopathic medicine (DO).

We’re excited to meet the new residents this summer. Thanks to everyone at the SMPH, the DFMCH and our partner programs who worked to make this year’s match a success!
