Trauma and Analgesia: Balancing Patient Comfort and Opioid-related Risks

On Friday September 9, 2016 we hosted a summit as part of phase one and two of Screening in Trauma for Opioid Misuse Prevention (STOMP). The summit was an all-day event titled ‘Trauma and Analgesia: Balancing Patient Comfort and Opioid Related Risks’. Over 40 medical professionals attended ranging from registered nurses, social workers, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, physicians and non-clinical professionals. Over 15 research institutions and Wisconsin trauma centers were represented.

Presentations covered the topic of opioid prescriptions, including the importance of pain management after trauma, screening and brief interventions, and outpatient opioid management. The focus group, which included 9 participants from 4 trauma centers, covered issues pertinent to trauma providers, including possible screening tools, complications surrounding follow-up, and management of acute pain. The summit opened an important discussion on how to balance opioid analgesia with concerns for patients’ long term care.
