Dr. Breen received his M.D. degree from the University of Minnesota Medical School, and while there spent his third year (1976-1977) in the RPAP program (a rural preceptorship) in Montevideo, MN. He was a Family Medicine resident at North Memorial Hospital in Minneapolis from 1978 to 1981 and returned to Montevideo to practice in 1981. While there, he had been involved in the RPAP program as a preceptor for medical students and had residents for their third year rural rotation. He had been a rural health care provider in Montevideo for 20 yrs. and was involved in all aspects of Family Medicine including geriatrics, orthopedics, surgery, emergency care, intensive care and obstetrics. Procedures performed include Cesarean Sections and tubal ligations as part of his obstetrical practice and Stress ECGs including pharmacologic testing. He was an owner and involved in the management of the Montevideo Clinic P.A. (1981-2001). He started the Cardiac Rehabilitation program at the Chippewa County Montevideo Hospital and has continued to be involved in Stress ECG testing in Eau Claire, WI. He joined the Eau Claire faculty in 2001 and became the Clinic Medical Director and is part of the team responsible for the clinic operations. He completed the Department of Family Medicine, Primary Care Faculty Development Program Fellowship at the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health, Madison, WI in 2002. He is involved in the development of practice management and procedural curriculums. He is presently involved with the development of the Human Patient Simulator (HPS) Lab and the integration of human patient simulation into the education of Family Medicine residents and other members of the community health care team. He has lectured on the HPS Lab and its benefit to resident and community education. He also coordinates the multidisciplinary use of this teaching tool with Chippewa Valley Technical College and other community partners. Dr. Breen was the recipient of the 2007 Marc Hansen Lecturer Award. This award is to faculty who have contributed substantially to the education of students and residents, or who have made an important scholarly contribution to the academic discipline of Family Medicine.
