Week 4

Dear PCC Preceptor,

This week marks the half-way point of your student's PCC rotation.

Key Task: Videotaping
If your student has not yet approached you about videotaping a patient encounter please ask them when they plan to make their tape. For a more detailed explanation of the videotaping process see: Videotaping Patients (pdf).

What's going on: Problem Based Learning Case 3: middle-aged woman with chest pain
Clinical Learning Opportunities:

  • Assessing a patient's risk for coronary artery disease, lipid disorders, hypertension, metabolic syndrome, GERD, anxiety, domestic violence, tobacco abuse and insomnia, delivering news to patients in denial

To supplement this session you could:

  • discuss the advantages and disadvantages of the various tests used to evaluate patients presenting with chest pain
  • have your student see a patient with a history of coronary artery disease and discuss the patient's care plan.

Doctor/Patient Communication
Some of the students will be reviewing their videotapes. The small group leader will use these tapes to trigger discussion about communication issues

Reminders: Provide Mid-Rotation Feedback
Your student should meet with you by the middle of next week to receive mid-rotation feedback form.

Thank you again for your teaching contributions.
