Week 7

Dear PCC Preceptor,

Key Task: Grading
Your student should be asking you for time to go through their final evaluation.
As you go through it with your student, please note the 'anchors' that describe grading criteria for assessing your student's performance.

We use the preceptors' and small group leader's numerical evaluations to calculate a clinical grade, which contributes 60% of the student's final grade. On the form, the highest grade is worth 5 points, 2nd highest = 4, 3rd = 3, etc. The 'A' threshold is 4.4, or about half highest, half 2nd-highest items. The medical school's ideal grade distribution is about 30% A, 20% AB and 50% B, BC and C's

You will also be asked to write comments on your student's performance. Please be as specific as possible. Positive comments are included in the student's Dean's Letter for residency application. Another area is reserved for any concerns you may have which will allow the medical school to provide the student with needed support.

An example and more information about grading in the PCC is here

What's Going on: Problem Based Learning: Completed
Your student is likely preparing for the exam, which has been clinical and written parts. More info is here
The exam contributes 40% of the student's final grade.

Reminders: Timely return of the student evaluation form
It is extremely important that you complete and turn in your evaluation of your student in a timely manner. Your student will not receive a final grade for the course until every evaluation has been accounted for. We send an evaluation form to all preceptors who worked with your student more than three half days (based on the student's weekly log). If you know of others at your clinic who worked with your student, please encourage them to complete and return their evaluation as soon as possible. Thank you!

Reminders: Community Projects
By now the students should have completed their projects. They will be required to do a 10-minute presentation about their project at the end of the clerkship; this will count 5% toward their final grade. Students should share their project findings and products with you. It woudl be great if you could find a few minutes to review their project or listen to their presentation

Once again, thank you for your contribution.
