While each clerkship site is unique, a common structure and core curriculum is maintained at all sites. At each regional site, a physician serves as director to organize all educational activities. In addition, a regional site coordinator provides support and logistical details regarding scheduling, housing and gathering of evaluation materials.
All students meet weekly with a Small Group Leader. The Small Group Leader provides continuity in teaching, leads case presentations and case-based or problem based-discussions. The Small Group Leader assists students with any problems they are encountering during the clerkship, working with regional and central staff to resolve any difficulties that may aries. The Small Group Leader will evaluate student performance in the weekly curriculum sessions. The small group sessions also include the Doctor-Patient Communication curriculum. Students will review their audiotapes of patient encounters and discuss strategies to refine interviewing and communication skills.
Students will work with physician preceptors at each clinical site. Students will be assigned to a primary preceptor who will provide orientation to their clinical site, review the student's goals, help select the proper mix of patients, provide ongoing feedback and complete a final evaluation of the student's performance. Students may also work with partners of their primary preceptors.
