Appleton
The Appleton site for the Primary Care Clerkship has a unique blend of experience in local community-based Family Practice clinics and learning opportunities at the residency clinic.
Throughout the eight-week clerkship, students are assigned to a clinic located in one of the Fox Cities - possibly in the heart of Appleton, or in a small local village with a population of 4,000. Students typically spend seventy-five percent of their time with practicing family physicians.
One day a week, the students return to the residency clinic for mentor sessions, core curricular didactic sessions, and doctor-patient communication activities. Almost all residency faculty participate in teaching the different core topics as they combine problem-based learning with other forms of teaching.
Students who are interested in additional experiences such as the Fox Cities Community Clinic, Outagamie County Health Center, Rehab, etc. can arrange these through the site coordinator. Students are also encouraged to attend any morning CME presentations of their interest presented weekly at the local hospitals.
The local interest and commitment from the medical community is very healthy in Appleton. Preceptors genuinely like to have medical students in their offices and students appreciate the balance of community family medicine with residency-like experiences.
