Madison

The Primary Care Clerkship - Madison provides students with a diversity of learning opportunities working with Family Practice, Pediatrics, and Internal Medicine physicians in UW clinics, residency teaching clinics, and community practices in rural and urban communities.

Each student is assigned to a family physician and an their choice of a internal medicine or general pediatric physician for the entire 8-week rotation. In some clinics, students work with one physician; in other clinics students work with several physicians and/or residents. Many clinics are located up to an hour's drive from Madison so students are required to have reliable transportation.

Most Madison PCC preceptors admit and follow hospitalized patients. Many perform obstetric deliveries and care for newborns, follow patients through home or nursing home visits, or through hospice care. While students are not expected to participate in hospital care during this rotation, they are encouraged to experience continuity of care through following patients should they become hospitalized. Students are also encouraged to take advantage of home visits and participation in nursing home rounds by asking their preceptor if they can accompany them on these visits.

Madison-based PCC students come together one morning each week for a four hour session of problem based learning and doctor-patient communication.
